The National Weather Service (NWS) issued tornado watches early Saturday, March 15, for parts of Illinois, Indiana, Texas. Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
Entire neighborhoods have been torn apart, trees uprooted, and residents trapped under collapsed structures, according to emergency responders.
Some of the hardest-hit areas include Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Mississippi, where widespread devastation has been reported.
In Mississippi, the community of Elliott was ravaged by nocturnal tornadoes, with emergency crews working overnight to rescue survivors from the debris.
Tornadoes that strike at night pose a greater threat because they are nearly impossible to see, leaving residents with little time to seek shelter, according to AccuWeather.
Between 9 p.m. Friday, March 14, and midnight, at least 10 tornadoes, detected by radar, touched down across several counties in northeastern Arkansas, AccuWeather noted.
As the storm system advances, more tornado warnings and watches are possible, keeping millions on high alert.
